There is a time in May when the tulips have finished and the early summer flowers have yet to start, the ‘May gap’. For a moist soil, I have found that geums are good for bridging this period.
Geum ‘Totally Tangerine’ was introduced in 2010, a result of breeding work conducted by a nurseryman in Sussex. The plant was a total surprise to him as he was attempting to produce a reliably perennial, compact, red-flowered plant; instead he finished with a taller one with orange blooms that flowers for months
Starting in spring on 60 cms stems, the plant is sterile and will keep producing flowers right through to autumn when it may have reached double that height. Stems that have finished carrying flowers should be removed to tidy the display, but it is not necessary to deadhead individual flowers. Division every three to four years also keeps the flower power going. Close up, the plants look rather sparse, but put them in a border and they take on a more solid appearance

Couldn’t agree more. Totally Tangerine is a fabulous plant and will go on flowering all season if you dead-head it regularly. I also love ‘Flames of Passion’ but basically I love all the Geums. They are excellent plants and very easy to divide every three years or so. 🙂
